Artful Players draws on original sources, some blatantly irreverent. It features high-handed patrons, shoddy dealers, sharp-tongued critics, cunning art thieves, and a fickle public. But the main characters are the artists themselves, many trained in Europe. In San Francisco they were free to stretch, experiment, even fail.
